30/12/24 evening – Don’t Be Slaves of Maya (English) | Guaruja, Brazil | Srila BV Vana Maharaja

  • 0:02:12 – How to progress in our spiritual life? We need three things: Sambandha (relationship with the Lord), Abhideya (the process of bhakti), and Prayojana (the ultimate goal). Srila Rupa Gosvamipada speaks about this in Bhakti-rasamrita-sindhu. The one goal is to give happiness to Krishna; this mood should be uninterrupted, like a continuous stream of honey. Bhakti should not stop; all efforts should be for Krishna’s happiness. For Krishna’s happiness, we must give up everything.
  • 0:07:36 – Description of Pravritti-marg (path of material enjoyment) and Nivritti-marg (path of renunciation).
  • 0:09:40 – Impersonalists realize there is no peace in this world and want to merge with the Lord.
  • 0:10:00 – The path of bhakti. The Lord says: “My devotees will never accept liberation.”
  • 0:13:25 – A pure devotee always thinks: “How can I serve my Ishtadeva?” If you attain this mood, the seva-vritti (service tendency) will come to you. The nature of the jiva is to serve; jivera svarupa haya krsna-dasa.
  • 0:15:16 – Maya-devi is never pleased with us. The three modes of material energy (sattva, rajas, tamas) make us dance. Maya-devi punishes us severely every day, like a master punishing a donkey.
  • 0:19:39 – The story of the three stray dogs: black, red, and white.
  • 0:34:00 – Day and night we follow Maya’s instructions; is anyone truly satisfied? A rich man thinks the king is happy; the king thinks the emperor is happy; the emperor thinks Indra is happy; Indra thinks the four-headed Brahma is happy; Brahma thinks the one chanting the holy names is happy. “Govinda adi-purusham…”
  • 0:40:05 – If you want to attain complete happiness, chant the holy names and serve the Lord. Then Maya will not disturb you.
  • 0:42:05 – Complete surrender – and the Lord will bestow all kinds of happiness upon you. If you practice devotional service to the Lord, you will have everything: dharma, artha, kama, moksha.
  • 0:43:54 – Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu explains that in this Kali-yuga, one should simply chant the holy names. Your desires will be fulfilled.
  • 0:45:02 – Avoid the ten kinds of offenses (to the holy name).
  • 0:47:09 – Srila Bhaktivedanta Sarasvati Prabhupada wrote an article: ‘Guru-bhogi’ and ‘Guru-tyagi’.
  • 0:48:30 – If you want to become a Manjari, follow the process. You must read the book by Param Gurudeva Narayana Gosvami Maharaja, Prabandha-panchaka; this book contains 5 articles that convey the essence of our parampara.
  • 0:53:00 – Srila Prabhupada preached against the smarta-brahmanas, and they even tried to kill him. Read the book ‘Life of the Acharya Kesari’. Read and translate books; otherwise, you will criticize the Vaishnavas and thus go to hell.
  • 0:58:14 – Description of our Guru-varga (line of spiritual masters), the Guru-parampara. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu received diksha from Ishvari Puripada -> Madhavendra Puripada -> the 6 Gosvamis. The pranama mantra of Rupa Gosvami: “Sri Chaitanya Mano ‘bhishtam…” Rupa Gosvami offered his heart to the Lord.
  • 1:01:00 – Description of the Bhagavata-parampara.
  • 1:04:13 – The smarta-brahmanas will disturb you if you do not know the Guru-varga.
  • 1:07:17 – The story of Upakhyan Upadesh: A man was herding a flock of sheep; there was a river, and a sadhu was approaching. The sadhu said, “Take this sheep and throw it into the water.”
  • 1:10:06 – Nishanta-lila (the pastime at the end of the night). How Vrinda-devi gave signals to the little birds, the roosters, and the monkey, Kakati, to wake Radha and Krishna. Hearing the parrots say “Jatila!” (the first rays of sunlight), Radha woke up, and thus the arati began.
  • 1:18:40 – Bhaktivinoda Thakur describes these lilas in Bhajana-rahasya, connecting them together with the Shikshashtaka.
