Gīta-govinda, Snigdha-madhusūdana: Rādhā Condemns Candana and the Malaya Breeze
• Three Cool Things Become Weapons: From Jayadeva’s aṣṭapadī, the dūtī tells Mādhava that in His viraha Śrī Rādhā condemns candana (sandal paste), finds indu-kiraṇa (moon-rays) a source of kheda, and takes the malaya-samīra as garala because it mixes with serpents on the sandal trees (nindati candanam…; Gīta-govinda 4.8.1).
• Utprekṣā and Rūpaka: Gurudeva opens the alaṅkāra — utprekṣā superimposes one object on another (iva, “as if”); rūpaka identifies them (as in candra-vadana). The three “arrows” — cool breeze, candana, moon-ray — attack Her kāma-agni, which here means aprākṛta prema.
• Manasija and the Mind: Manasija (mind-born) is Kāmadeva; the six enemies seat in the mind. Control it by abhyāsa and vairāgya; even a distant object can disturb citta through meditation, while a near object cannot if the mind is restrained.
• Cinmaya Jīva, Gear-Change: Citing mamaivāṁśo jīva-loke (Bhagavad-gītā 15.7) and Prema-vivarta’s cit-kaṇa jīva, kṛṣṇa cinmaya bhāskara, he shows the jīva and Kṛṣṇa as cinmaya. Turning bahirmukha toward bhoga, māyā seizes like a piśācī; the “gear change” from Kṛṣṇa to māyā jolts the life.
• Māyā the Maidservant; Nīti: Māyā is not the enemy but a dāsī who disciplines like police when we abandon sevā. Deal with kings and armed men only as needed (nadīnāṁ śastrapāṇīnāṁ…; Cāṇakya-nīti 1.15).
• Kāma as Vāsanā; Anāsakti: Kāma means desire, not only lust; desire should sit only in Govinda-sevā. Live in the family without the āsakti of “mine” — saṁsāra is not rejected; bondage is.
• Lotus-Leaf Armour: In 4.8.2 Rādhā, under Madana’s ceaseless arrows, wraps Her heart’s marma in a wet lotus-petal mesh as varma to protect Kṛṣṇa within — yet lotus is itself His arrow, so the pain deepens (utprekṣā).
• Many Ṭīkās, One Kitchen: Flower-arrows of Kāmadeva and the many commentaries are like one vegetable cooked with different masalas — angles differ, experience writes. Present bhāva slowly; learn nitya-līlā from paramparā, not by self-made cutting.
The kathā closes in the room; harināma and the jayadhvani follow.
