How the jiva is deluded by maya.
Maya, material energy, cannot touch the transcendental soul, but it surrounds the living entity because the jiva is very small (example of an electric current).
Punishment is also mercy, so maya gives us mercy by punishing us to make us right.
If we follow Ekadasi Tithi, krishna-bhakti will manifest in our heart. People follow Ekadasi, they receive punya and attain svargaloka to enjoy. Vaishnavas follow Ekadasi for bhakti.
