Prema-vivarta, Day 4: Grantha-racanā — Jagadānanda the Rādhā-pada-dāsī, the Parrot’s Gaura-nāma, and Navadvīpa as Vṛndāvana
• Why the Book Was Written: Opening chapter two (Grantha-racanā), Gurudeva reads how Jagadānanda Paṇḍita, “a paṇḍita in name only,” writes in tears whatever līlā of Mahāprabhu arises in his heart. To Svarūpa Dāmodara he says he writes only about the one he loves (pirīta), for no worldly purpose, and Svarūpa leaves him as bātula, mad (Prema-vivarta 2.1–10).
• Not Satyabhāmā but Rādhā-pada-dāsī: When Mahāprabhu teases him as the pāṭeśvarī (chief queen) of Dvārakā, Jagadānanda replies that he is a maidservant of Rādhā’s feet, that the Lord has stolen Rādhā’s complexion, and that he will catch the thief and take Him to Vraja. So, Gurudeva notes, he is not Satyabhāmā; Satyabhāmā would not speak like this (2.11–16).
• The Childhood Quarrel: Lamenting Mahāprabhu’s absence, Jagadānanda remembers a schoolboy fight with Nimāi, a night of weeping by the Gaṅgā, and the Lord coming before dawn with Gadādhara, Himself unfed and sleepless. Prema is like a vīṇā string that, touched anywhere, resounds to the far end; worldly “I love you” is self-interest. Jñāna and vairāgya come by themselves from bhakti (2.17–25; Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.2.7).
• Anusaraṇa, Not Anukaraṇa: Follow prema-kalaha (lovers’ quarrel), do not imitate it like a monkey: Mahāprabhu slept on the ground and refused Jagadānanda’s oil and mattress, but we must keep yukta-āhāra and yukta-vairāgya (balanced eating and renunciation) or end up in hospital. Śmaśāna-vairāgya (cremation-ground renunciation) fades, and phalgu-vairāgya hides desire as the Phalgu river at Gayā hides its water under the sand. What matters is ruci (taste) for the Holy Name, without which tapasyā gains nothing (Caitanya-caritāmṛta Antya 6.236–237; Bhagavad-gītā 6.17; ārādhito yadi hariḥ…).
• Only Caitanya: Jagadānanda embraces anyone who cries “Caitanya!” as his own brother and will not look at the face of one who forgets Him, even a god or goddess. Gurudeva sings Narahari Sarakāra’s mana re kaha nā gaura-kathā and urges rising each morning with Nitāi-Gaurāṅga’s names (2.26–30).
• The Parrot on the Alakanandā: In a bakula grove (Gurudeva recalls the fragrant little flowers on his morning walks in Kuala Lumpur), Nimāi catches a parrot and asks it to say “Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa.” It answers “Gaurahari!”: Vṛndāvana has become Navadvīpa, You are my Kṛṣṇa and Gadāi is Rādhā. Go-rā means Govinda and Rādhā united, and gadāi in Bengali means utterly simple (2.31–43).
• Navadvīpa Is Vṛndāvana: The sixteen-krośa Navadvīpa is Vṛndāvana, so do Navadvīpa parikramā rather than wander to Kedāra-Badrī; the four dhāmas are in Vraja itself. Navadvīpa, the dhāma of audārya (magnanimity), gives both audārya and mādhurya (sweetness). One who sees Śacīnandana as different from Yaśodānandana, or does not worship Gaura though born in Gauḍa, never touches Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa’s nāma, rūpa, dhāma and līlā (2.44–48).
• Gratitude, Caṇḍīdāsa and Rāmānanda: Never disrespect the devī or devatā whose mercy led you to the path; satsaṅga gives viveka, discernment (Rāmacaritamānasa). Gurudeva tells of the boy Kamalākṣa before the devī, Caṇḍīdāsa’s 108th lotus refused by Durgā as Govinda’s, and Rāmī-Caṇḍīdāsa’s caturbhuja darśana, and says Rāya Rāmānanda spoke only the highest Rādhā-Govinda kathā (kalayati nayanaṁ…). Gaurasundara is the worshipable Lord of Kali-yuga, whose weapon is the Holy Name (Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 11.5.32, 12.13.23; Śikṣāṣṭaka 1).
The class closes with the second chapter complete; chapter three is to begin the next morning.
