Prema Beyond Self-interest: Śikṣāṣṭaka 8, the Veṇu-gīta and Rādhā’s Abhisāra
• Worldly Love Turns Violent: There is love in every baddha jīva, but where self-interest is hurt, that love turns into violence, abuse and hatred. True prema does not look to its own happiness; Rādhā even says She would fall at the feet of the one Kṛṣṇa desires so that He is not unhappy (Caitanya-caritāmṛta Antya 20.52–53).
• Śikṣāṣṭaka 8: Let Him embrace Me or trample Me, give darśana or break My heart, let Him be a debauchee: He alone is the Lord of My life. If My pain gives Him great happiness, that pain is My best happiness (Śikṣāṣṭaka 8; Caitanya-caritāmṛta Antya 20.47, 20.52).
• The Aprākṛta World: There no word of violence exists, only words of prema. Like a gentle breeze in summer, the eternal līlā of Rādhā-Govinda in Vṛndāvana is ever fresh, and Yogamāyā creates viraha for a moment only to nourish milana.
• Not Because of Beauty: In the Rāya Rāmānanda saṁvāda Rādhā says neither is He the enjoyer nor She the enjoyed, and no messenger was sought (Caitanya-caritāmṛta Madhya 8.194). Worldly examples of beauty do not fit; there everything is nitya-vartamāna, with no past or future.
• The Peacock Feather: Seeing a peacock feather, Rādhā trembles and weeps. Calling Kṛṣṇa and the peacock brahmacārīs, She wishes She too were free to stay with Him; in mahābhāva there is even a longing for a non-human birth.
• Rādhā Speaks the Veṇu-gīta: The ślokas praising the fortunate does and Vṛndāvana marked by Kṛṣṇa’s footprints are Rādhā’s words, repeated by Śukadeva in Her mood; Brahmā and the devatās worship those footprints (Bhāgavatam 10.21.10–11). “Devakī” here means Yaśodā (Bṛhad-viṣṇu Purāṇa), and the gopīs hide their bhāva by avahitthā.
• Rādhā’s Vṛndāvana: Every creeper there has been touched by Rādhā’s hand, and the creepers are Her sakhīs (Rādhā-rasa-sudhā-nidhi 14). Going to meet Kṛṣṇa with Her hand on a sakhī’s shoulder, Her eyes dart in all directions like a lotus moved by the breeze (Jagannātha-vallabha-nāṭaka); the sakhī and the earth feel blessed by Her touch.
• Kalaṅkinī: In a Bengali dhāmāil kīrtana Rādhā says the flute that plays Her name has made Her kalaṅkinī, while Jaṭilā, Kuṭilā and the neighbours taunt Her. Gurudeva adds the Hindi bhajan “Dūr nagarī”, about how hard it is to reach Kṛṣṇa’s Gokula by day, by night, alone or with the sakhīs.
The kathā ends with Gurudeva praising the dhāmāil kīrtana; a private conversation follows.
