Vijayā-daśamī and Śrī Madhvācārya: Sampradāya, Bheda-vāda and the Refutation of Māyāvāda
• Vijayā-daśamī: On Daśamī, Gurudeva recalls, Rāmacandra set out for Laṅkā with the vānara armies after the four months of rains. Vijayā-daśamī is one of four days in the year, with Vasanta-pañcamī, Rāma-navamī and Akṣaya-tṛtīyā, when no muhūrta need be consulted.
• Why a Sampradāya: The guru-paramparā connects us directly with Kṛṣṇa, from Kṛṣṇa to Brahmā, Nārada, Vyāsa and Madhva (kṛṣṇa haite catur-mukha …). A sampradāya bestows prema-bhakti; a mantra read from a printed book bears no fruit (sampradāya-vihīnā … mantrās te viphalā matāḥ). This is not sectarian party politics; mantra-siddhi comes only through a sāmpradāyika guru.
• The Four Sampradāyas: Gurudeva names the original and Kali-yuga ācāryas: Lakṣmī and Rāmānuja, four-headed Brahmā and Madhva, Śiva and Viṣṇusvāmī, the Catuḥsana and Nimbāditya, all shown in Gurudeva’s temple in Navadvīpa. Mahāprabhu, Svayam Bhagavān, founded no sampradāya but took the essence of all and accepted the Madhva line for two reasons, tattva and rasa.
• Viśiṣṭādvaita and Bheda-vāda: Rāmānuja’s viśiṣṭādvaita is like a red cow, the substance and its quality together. Brahman’s primary meaning is Bhagavān, to whom none is equal or greater (na tasya kāryaṁ karaṇaṁ ca vidyate …). Against the strong Śaṅkara-vāda of ahaṁ brahmāsmi and tat tvam asi, Madhva made bheda primary: Īśvara is Māyādhīśa and māyā His maidservant, while the jīva is His eternal aṁśa (mamaivāṁśo jīva-loke …).
• Five Differences: Jīvas differ by guṇa and rasa, the cetana jīva feels, wills and knows while stone does not, and even jaḍa objects differ, like water and stone or a stone wall and a glass one. The advaitavādīs’ “all are equal” is like everything looking the same from an airplane.
• Rasa and Upāsanā: Madhva freed a merchant’s stranded ship, asked only for a lump of gopī-candana and found Gopāla with a churning-rod inside it. His eight Uḍupī maṭhas serve Bāla-Kṛṣṇa in gopī-bhāva, like the eight sakhīs.
• Madhva’s Life: Born in Uḍupī to Madhyageha Bhaṭṭa and Vedavidyā and named Vāsudeva, he repaid his father’s debt with tamarind seeds turned to money. Gurudeva warns against borrowing and lending, since an unpaid debt can mean birth as a brahma-rākṣasa. Madhva made a king and his ministers dig their own lake, liberated the asura Maṇimān from a snake’s body, took sannyāsa at twelve as Pūrṇaprajña Tīrtha, met Vyāsadeva at Badarikāśrama and left this world at eighty on Māghī Śuklā Navamī while explaining the Aitareya Upaniṣad.
• Rasa Unfolds Gradually: As lotus petals open one by one, rasa blossoms from śānta to mādhurya through śraddhā, sādhu-saṅga and the other stages; no one becomes a gopī in a day. Each tastes his own rasa, as Hanumān’s Rāma is his all (śrī-nāthe jānakī-nāthe …) and Rādhā’s Śyāmasundara is Her life (tyajantu bāndhavāḥ sarve …).
• Māyāvāda Refuted: At Uḍupī Mahāprabhu corrected the Tattvavādīs’ goal of mukti to premā-bhakti. While Māyāvāda (brahma satyaṁ jagan mithyā) remains in the heart, bhakti cannot enter; Gurudeva explains its ghaṭākāśa, reflection, rope-and-snake and dream analogies.
Gurudeva closes with Śiva’s answer to Pārvatī that Māyāvāda is covered Buddhism taught on Kṛṣṇa’s order (māyāvādam asac-chāstraṁ …), so that people would keep away from him.
