Sādhu-saṅga and Kṣamā: Lessons from Vasiṣṭha and Viśvāmitra
• The Place of Vasiṣṭha: Speaking in English with Russian translation at Vashisht, the place of Vasiṣṭha Ṛṣi, guru of Lord Rāmacandra, Gurudeva begins with the guru: even Rāmacandra took mantra from Vasiṣṭha, and Mahāprabhu took dīkṣā from Īśvara Purī and sannyāsa from Keśava Bhāratī. Without initiation and complete surrender to the guru, sādhana and bhajana are useless.
• Two Kinds of Dīkṣā: Formal (ānuṣṭhānika) initiation, when the guru gives mantra, and pāramārthikī (spiritual) initiation, which unfolds step by step from śraddhā to prema (ādau śraddhā); both are essential, and realization does not come in a day.
• Vidhi Leads to Rāga: Following the rules of śāstra is the doorway; to one fixed in vidhi-mārga the Lord gives the jewel of independence and entrance into rāga-mārga (vidhi-mārga-rata-jane). Rāmacandra offered his whole kingdom to Vasiṣṭha, who returned it, telling him to rule.
• The Quarrel Over Charity: Viśvāmitra, a kṣatriya, gave Vasiṣṭha lavish gifts, but Vasiṣṭha gave him only a little, saying he was giving the highest gift, sādhu-saṅga, which means hari-kathā. Viśvāmitra objected that a hungry man cannot do bhajana (“bhūkhe bhajana na hoi gopālā”), and they went to Anantadeva, the expansion of Baladeva, for a decision.
• Holding the Universe: With the fruit of all his karma, jñāna, yoga and tapasyā, Viśvāmitra could not hold even one universe on his head and begged to be saved. Vasiṣṭha first offered praṇāma (vande guru-pada-dvandvaṁ) and, by the fruit of merely unknowing sādhu-saṅga, raised not only that universe but all universes. Like fire that burns whether one knows it or not, sādhu-saṅga gives its fruit even to the unaware.
• Hari-kathā Is the Greatest Gift: Those who spread kṛṣṇa-kathā are the best donors, for it is the life of suffering souls and destroys sins (tava kathāmṛtaṁ). Whoever truly hears hari-kathā will not return to this world, “a hundred percent guarantee”.
• The Missing Quality: Viśvāmitra wanted to be a brahmarṣi, but a brahma-jñānī is undisturbed in distress, unexcited in happiness and free from attachment, fear and anger (duḥkheṣv anudvigna-manāḥ); anger comes from attachment, like a baby denied the fire. Enraged, Viśvāmitra killed Vasiṣṭha’s sons, yet Vasiṣṭha told Arundhatī that Viśvāmitra lacked only one quality: kṣamā (forgiveness). Hearing this, Viśvāmitra surrendered.
• Forgiveness and Affection: Kṣamā is what makes us truly human and qualified for bhakti. Correction without revenge is love, as Mother Yaśodā only raised the stick to Kṛṣṇa; Vasiṣṭha never took revenge or changed his mind.
Gurudeva concludes that we are fortunate to come to Vasiṣṭha’s place to learn kṣamā-guṇa, and urges everyone to seek sādhu-saṅga and hear hari-kathā.
