• Why We Remember Great Souls: Speaking in a devotee’s home on the appearance day of Śrīla Bhakti Pramoda Purī Gosvāmī Mahārāja, Gurudeva explains that if Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Prabhupāda is the moon, his associates are its rays. The world remembers poets and patriots; the devotees remember the Lord’s eternal associates, whom Bhagavān, out of bhakta-vātsalya (affection for His devotees), sends as guru, śāstra and sādhu to free the jīvas from the prison of saṁsāra (māyā-mugdha jīvera).
• Bengal, Śarad and Bhārata: He recalls the undivided Bengal of 1898 where Purī Mahārāja appeared, its autumn of white kāśa flowers and Durgā-pūjā, and the six seasons of Bhāratavarṣa, the land where the Supreme Lord Himself appeared (bhārata-bhūmite haila manuṣya-janma yāra). He mentions that the party is heading on to Himachal Pradesh, “Devabhūmi”.
• Read Bhāgavata from the Bhāgavata: The grantha-bhāgavata (the book) is understood only under the bhakta-bhāgavata (the devotee), for every syllable of the Bhāgavatam holds many meanings (kṛṣṇa-tulya bhāgavata). From the ātmārāma verse Sārvabhauma drew nine meanings, Mahāprabhu eighteen, and then sixty-four for Sanātana; therefore yāha, bhāgavata paḍa vaiṣṇavera sthāne.
• Four Qualities for Kīrtana: The third Śikṣāṣṭaka verse, tṛṇād api sunīcena, and Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura’s song ask for dainya, dayā, anye māna and pratiṣṭhā-varjana (humility, compassion, respect for others and giving up prestige). Gurudeva used to say that Purī Mahārāja was the living form of this verse.
• Arcana and Rāga: Following Prabhupāda’s preface to Bhajana-rahasya, he contrasts arcana-mārga (the path of rules, with awe) with rāga-mārga. The Vrajavāsīs are rāgātmika (iṣṭe svārasikī rāgaḥ, yā dohane): they saw Kṛṣṇa lift Govardhana for seven days yet treated Him as one of the family, as parents still scold a son who becomes President.
• “Today a Vaiṣṇava Gave Me an Adhikāra”: A speaker praised Purī Mahārāja’s expertise in arcana, and his disciples heard it as calling him a kaniṣṭha (neophyte). Purī Mahārāja rejoiced: he had never thought himself even a Vaiṣṇava, and tṛṇād api showed how hard that is. Gurudeva adds that sweeping the temple can be kuñja-sevā, depending on bhāva (yat-kiṅkarīṣu), and that kaṇṭhī and tilaka alone do not make a Vaiṣṇava.
• Uttama and Kaniṣṭha: Kaniṣṭha and uttama can look alike from outside, but the uttama is absorbed in bhāva, seeing his iṣṭadeva everywhere (sthāvara-jaṅgama dekhe). Examples are Gaura-kiśora dāsa Bābājī’s endless “Ekādaśī”, Purī Mahārāja not noticing a scorpion sting, and, as a child, his fever when he forgot to cover Ṭhākurajī with a blanket. The darśana of such a soul frees one like sunrise (sādhūnāṁ sama-cittānāṁ, gaṅgāra paraśa).
• Surrender and the Bhaktivinoda-dhārā: Duryodhana saw Kṛṣṇa yet refused even five villages, and Kṛṣṇa let the war proceed to give the Gītā and uphold women’s honour, ending in sarva-dharmān parityajya. Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura (Kamala Mañjarī) brought Bhaktisiddhānta (Nayana-maṇi Mañjarī) and the other mañjarīs into the world; this Bhaktivinoda-dhārā will never stop, and we belong to the Gaura-parivāra.
Gurudeva urges everyone to stay unshakeable in the pure Gauḍīya line and to strive, as Śrīla Bhakti Pramoda Purī Gosvāmī Mahārāja did, to become truly lower than a blade of grass.
