Cleansing the Heart at Guṇḍicā, Kṛṣṇa Never Leaves Vraja, and the Foremost of Thieves (Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, Chapter One)
• Guṇḍicā-mārjana: Continuing Antya-līlā, Chapter One, Gurudeva explains that Mahāprabhu’s cleansing of the Guṇḍicā temple teaches us to clean the chariot of the mind and the throne of the heart so that Govinda can sit there. Dirt on the body is washed with water, but the dirt of the mind is washed only with the “soap” of the holy name, as Mahāprabhu’s ceto-darpaṇa-mārjanam (“cleansing the mirror of the heart”) declares.
• Vāsanā, the Hidden Seed: Even when sinful acts stop, vāsanā (the desire to sin) remains, like bamboo roots that sprout again in the rainy season after the canes are burnt. Only bhagavat-nāma in sādhu-saṅga uproots it; bhukti-mukti-spṛhā (the desire for enjoyment and liberation) is a piśācī (witch) in the heart, and the desire for sāyujya-mukti (merging) is the most dangerous kaitava (cheating), yāhā haite kṛṣṇa-bhakti haya antardhāna.
• Anartha-nivṛtti Step by Step: Gurudeva lists the four kinds of anartha (svarūpa-bhrama, asat-tṛṣṇā, hṛdaya-daurbalya, aparādha) and their four sources, and explains that anarthas leave gradually (eka-deśa, bahu-deśa, prāyikī, pūrṇā, ātyantikī) through śravaṇa and kīrtana (śṛṇvatāṁ sva-kathāḥ kṛṣṇaḥ). Like the smell of camphor left in an empty box, the scent of offences can remain even in bhāva, as seen in Bharata Mahārāja’s attachment to the deer.
• Māyā-vijṛmbhita and Indrajalika Līlā: Bharata Mahārāja’s fall is called māyā-vijṛmbhita-līlā, shown to teach the world, while the Mauṣala-līlā, Sāmba’s curse, the iron pestle and the hunter’s arrow are indrajālika-līlā (an illusion created by the Lord). People of karma-kāṇḍa love such stories, Gurudeva says, but karma-kāṇḍa, jñāna-kāṇḍa, kevala viṣera bhāṇḍa (they are pots of poison); real nectar is tava kathāmṛtam, the Lord’s own kathā.
• Kṛṣṇa Never Leaves Vraja: After the vanya-bhojana (forest picnic) at Āiṭoṭā, Mahāprabhu tells Rūpa Gosvāmī, kṛṣṇere bāhira nāhi kariha vraja haite, and the verse vṛndāvanaṁ parityajya sa kvacin naiva gacchati shows that Vrajendra-nandana stays in Vraja while Mathurādhīśa and Dvārakādhīśa are His other manifestations, just as Śrīmatī Rādhikā is both saṁyoginī and viyoginī. Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa are eka-i svarūpa (one form) appearing as two to taste līlā-rasa.
• Two Dramas, Union and Separation: Understanding that Satyabhāmā’s dream order and Mahāprabhu’s words agreed, Rūpa Gosvāmī divided his work into Vidagdha-mādhava and Lalita-mādhava. Gurudeva explains that vipralambha (separation) nourishes sambhoga (union), na vinā vipralambhena sambhogaḥ puṣṭim aśnute, with four kinds of each, and recalls the beauty of Kṛṣṇa in the Veṇu-gīta that no words can express.
• The Lord Appears According to Bhāva: Bhagavān reveals the form that matches each devotee’s bhāva, as Kṛṣṇa showed Himself as Rāma to Tulasīdāsa. At the Ratha-yātrā only Svarūpa Dāmodara knew why Mahāprabhu recited yaḥ kaumāra-haraḥ, and Rūpa Gosvāmī revealed its meaning in priyaḥ so ’yaṁ kṛṣṇaḥ, where Rādhikā longs for the forests of the Yamunā.
• The Foremost of Thieves: Bilvamaṅgala Ṭhākura, after Kṛṣṇa freed His hand, said hastam utkṣipya yāto ’si, “if You leave my heart I will count Your strength,” and praised Him as caurāgragaṇyaṁ puruṣam, thief of butter, of garments, of sins and of hearts, warning bandhu-saṅge yadi tava raṅga parihāsa not to go near Keśī-ghāṭa. Gurudeva closes with Kṛṣṇa’s wish to be scolded and the sweet story of little Kanhaiyā begging Mother Yaśodā for His marriage.
Gurudeva urges everyone to clean the heart through nāma and sādhu-saṅga so that Govinda, the foremost thief, may steal it and never leave.
