Śrīla Gurudeva Śrī Śrīmad Bhaktivedānta Vana Gosvāmī Mahārāja
Make Your Home Vṛndāvana: Bhajana Over Opulence
• Viraha Reveals Vraja: Praising the devotees’ kīrtana and the jhāṅkī of Uddhava’s visit to Vraja, Gurudeva explains that we understand what Vraja truly is only through viraha (separation), as the Vrajavāsīs felt after Kṛṣṇa left for Mathurā and Dvārakā. Hearing kathā and keeping sat-saṅga bear fruit only when we put them into practice through bhajana.
• Rāvaṇa Had Everything: Rāvaṇa possessed a kingdom of gold, a chaste wife Mandodarī counted among the five satī-nārīs (chaste ladies), a son Indrajit who defeated Indra, and devatās such as Vāyu and Varuṇa serving in his house. Yet his name is counted among the rākṣasas, because a person is praised or condemned according to svabhāva (nature) and karma.
• Varṇāśrama by Guṇa and Karma: Quoting janma karma ca me divyam and cātur-varṇyaṁ mayā sṛṣṭaṁ guṇa-karma-vibhāgaśaḥ (“the four varṇas were created by Me according to quality and work”), Gurudeva explains that a brāhmaṇa’s son who does not follow brāhmaṇa-dharma is not called a brāhmaṇa.
• Śiva’s House of Ice: When Pārvatī asked for a house, Śiva, absorbed in bhagavat-nāma and kathā, set up four slabs of ice as her room, which melted in the scorching sun. Gurudeva notes that a gṛha (home) is defined by the gṛhiṇī (housewife); without her it is a maṭha.
• Rāvaṇa’s Dakṣiṇā: Kubera built Pārvatī a splendid palace, and Rāvaṇa, the Vedic scholar, performed a month-long yajña for the gṛha-praveśa (house-warming), as kṛte yad dhyāyato viṣṇuṁ… lists yajña as the process of Tretā. Having nothing to give as dakṣiṇā (the priest’s fee), Śiva gave Rāvaṇa the palace itself; still, as an enemy of Rāma he lost Śiva’s company, for jāke priya na rāma baidehī (“one to whom Rāma and Sītā are not dear should be given up”).
• Nāma, Not Rules: Without bhajana no puṇya (pious merit) brings benefit. Gurudeva asks everyone to chant harināma on the mālā into which the guru transmits śakti, without becoming a counter-driven machine or a dry vidhi-vādī (ritualist), and recalls Mahāprabhu chanting on a cloth with one hundred and eight knots. Following pṛthivīte āche yata nagarādi grāma, everyone should preach by their own conduct.
• Pure Food, Pure Heart: He urges giving up onion, garlic, eggs and liquor, explains the three kinds of food in the Gītā and āhāra-śuddhau sattva-śuddhiḥ (“when food is pure, the heart becomes pure”), and asks that every meal first be offered to Ṭhākura-jī, as patraṁ puṣpaṁ phalaṁ toyaṁ teaches.
• Make the Home Vṛndāvana: Citing kṛṣṇera saṁsāra kara chāḍi’ anācāra, jīve dayā, kṛṣṇa-nāma—sarva-dharma-sāra, he says we need not become sādhus but must make our saṁsāra Kṛṣṇa’s, as the Vrajavāsīs first feed Govinda and then honour His prasāda. A house with saints, hari-kathā and sadācāra becomes Vṛndāvana; a house without them is like a snake’s hole. Like a jewel that lights all sides, unlike a lamp with darkness beneath it, we should both practise and preach.
Gurudeva asks everyone to keep the Gītā at home, chant at least two rounds before leaving, and turn their homes into Vṛndāvana through nāma, pure food and hari-kathā.
