The Lord gave us free will.
Because we forget God and do not serve Him, Maya punishes us.
Maya Devi is not happy with her service because she wants you to serve Krsna.
Maya Devi is not cruel, her duty is to apply punishment to those who do not follow the rules and do not serve Krsna.
If there is no punishment for offenders, problems will arise, and bhajana-sadhana will not be practised.
Svatantra-sakti (power of independence): why did the Lord give this power (free will) to the jivas? Because if He didn’t give it, the jivas would be inert.
People misuse their power of independence.
The power of independence is made up of feeling, desiring and knowing.
Question: Why do many people have the opportunity to enjoy a lot in the material world? Answer: In fact they are suffering, because they are far from Krsna and their purpose of serving Him.
People think they are happy, but they are not. Sooner or later they lose everything.
Duryodhana is known as the incarnation of Kali, so says the Garga Samhita. He enjoyed it a lot and in the end he lost everything.
It is necessary to receive punishment to be purified: rectified and purified.
